While many of us wonder when Apple will make a Mac with touchscreen support, a Mac product already included touchscreen support over two decades ago.

Last month, content creator Michael MJD uploaded a video of a prototype iMac G3 with a touchscreen sensor. The original iMac was released over 25 years ago, but the touchscreen variant was not a SKU Apple directly sold; rather, it was an engineering prototype from Elo Touch Solutions, a company that is also a "Value Added Reseller" for Apple products.

The video notes that Elo produced these G3 iMacs and sold them as interactive kiosk machines. More interestingly, these machines used acoustic sound waves, which detected where you touched the display. The modification of the device is pretty neat; the original iMac's design compared to its successors is a stark contrast, aside from its bright translucent color options, and an unconventional shape. The modification of touchscreen controls fits the overall aesthetic and design the G3 were invoking.

Apple has yet to officially make a Mac that includes touchscreen support on the display to consumers since the creation of the iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. There's still hope consumers may get a touchscreen Mac, however. Earlier this year, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman wrote that a new MacBook Pro would release in 2025 and would include an OLED display with touchscreen support.
